Old English Text Generator
Want your name to look like it was carved above a cathedral door? Type it into the tool and you get it back like this β free, with no sign-up: ππ©π‘ ππ«π€π©π¦π°π₯. That heavy, spiky lettering is blackletter β the handwriting of medieval scribes, later turned into Fraktur, the standard printed script in Germany for centuries. You still meet it today on newspaper mastheads, diplomas, beer labels and tattoo flash sheets.
Old English text is blackletter lettering β the dense, angular script of medieval European manuscripts and early printing. Our generator recreates the look with Unicode’s Mathematical Fraktur letters, so what you copy is real text β ready to paste into an Instagram bio, a Discord name or a game profile. It is completely free, there is no sign-up, and it works on your phone in seconds.
Old English copy and paste styles
Every style below is made of Unicode characters β not an image, and not a font file. That is why it pastes almost anywhere: if an app accepts text, it accepts this.
Classic Fraktur β the traditional masthead look:
- ππ©π‘ ππ«π€π©π¦π°π₯
- π π©ππ π¨π©π’π±π±π’π―
- πππ―π¨ ππ«π¦π€π₯π±
- ππ±ππΆ ππ±π―π¬π«π€
- ππ¬πΆππ©π±πΆ
Bold Fraktur β thicker strokes that hold up better at small sizes:
- πππππππππππ
- π―πππ πΆπππππ
Which one should you pick? Classic Fraktur has finer lines and the more elegant, old-document feel β it suits tattoos, certificates and printed designs. Bold Fraktur keeps its shape when the text is small, so it survives phone screens, tiny bio lines and game lobbies where the classic style’s thin strokes can look faint. If your word will be read at a glance, go bold; if it will be looked at closely, go classic.
Copy tip: on a phone, long-press the text and tap Copy. On a computer, select it and press Ctrl+C (or Cmd+C on Mac).
How to use the Old English text generator
- Type or paste your word, name or short phrase into the box.
- Scroll through the styles and pick your blackletter β classic Fraktur is finer, bold Fraktur is heavier.
- Tap Copy, or select the converted text and copy it yourself.
- Paste it into your bio, profile name, chat or design.
That is the whole process. Nothing to install, nothing to download, and you can redo it as many times as you like.
Old English for tattoos and logos
Blackletter is one of the most popular lettering styles in tattoo work, and for good reason. The dense strokes look permanent and serious β the opposite of a trendy font that dates within two years. It also carries instant meaning: loyalty, family, faith, a hometown, a surname. One word in blackletter reads like a statement, not a decoration.
Placement ideas that suit the style:
- Forearm: one or two words read clearly along the arm β the classic spot for lettering.
- Chest and collarbone: a surname, or a short phrase like πππͺπ¦π©πΆ ππ¦π―π°π±, follows the chest line well.
- Spine or ribs: a single word suits the tall, narrow letterforms.
- Knuckles and fingers: only very short words β four letters at most, and expect touch-ups.
If blackletter feels too heavy for the piece you have in mind β a wedding piece or a softer memorial tattoo, say β the other classic option is calligraphy. Try the calligraphy font styles and compare the two moods before you commit to ink.
Two practical warnings. First, size: blackletter’s thin connecting strokes clog when a tattoo is small, and ink spreads slightly as it ages. If you print your word at the planned size and it is hard to read at arm’s length, it is too small for skin. Second, treat the generator output as your concept, not the final stencil. Take it to your artist β a good lettering artist redraws it as a proper tattoo design, with spacing made for skin rather than a screen.
For logos, the same weight works in your favour. Barber shops, tattoo studios, breweries, streetwear labels and metal bands all use blackletter because it signals craft and heritage instantly. Keep it to one to three words, pair it with a simple icon, and never set your tagline in it β the name carries the design; the details need a plain font.
One trick tattoo artists and logo designers both use: set only the first letter, or the first word, in blackletter and the rest in a clean plain font. You keep the medieval impact, but nobody has to decode the whole line β it works for a surname piece on the forearm and for a shop sign in exactly the same way.
Old English names for games and profiles
A plain name disappears in a lobby or a follower list. The same name in blackletter stops the scroll:
- ππ©π’π΅ππ«π‘π’π―
- βπ°πππ’π©π©π
- πππ―π π²π°
- ππ₯ππ‘π¬π΄
- πππ―π―π¦π¬π―
Gamers use it for display names in PUBG, Free Fire and Fortnite, and for clan and guild tags. On Instagram it works in the name line and the bio. On Discord it works as a server nickname, so you can keep your account name normal and go full medieval only in the servers where it fits.
One honest tip: a few games accept special characters in the display name but not in the login ID, and a small number strip them out completely. Test with a short name before you pay for a name change. If the style shows up as empty boxes in the preview, that game cannot render it (see below).
Groups use it too: a whole squad or clan converting their names in the same style reads as one crew before a match even starts. Two friends do the same with matching bio lines on Instagram β one name in classic Fraktur, the other in bold, same family, slightly different weight.
Gothic vs Old English β what is the difference?
Old English is Textura-style blackletter β the English name for the medieval book hand β formal, heavy and official, while Gothic is the historical umbrella name for all blackletter, now often used for darker, decorative styling. If the darker mood is the one you want, try our Gothic Font Generator and the full gothic vs old english breakdown β and ask one question: should this word feel official or dangerous?
One honest warning about readability
Blackletter was made for short, important words β not paragraphs. Set a whole paragraph in it and the dense strokes merge into a black wall that even fans struggle to read. That is not a flaw in the generator; it is simply how the style works. Use it where it shines: names, headlines, one-line quotes, tattoo words, logos. Keep the long text in a normal font, and let the blackletter line be the one people remember.
Where Old English text works β and where it does not
Because the output is real Unicode text, it works anywhere you can paste text:
- Instagram and TikTok bios, name lines and captions
- Discord server nicknames and WhatsApp display names
- Most game display names and clan tags
- Facebook posts, comments and page names
The limit is the device, not the text. Some older phones, and a few apps, do not include a font that can draw these characters, so the letters appear as empty boxes β sometimes called tofu. If that happens to you, the text itself is fine; it will look right on a newer device. Paste it into another app to check before you blame the copy. And if one platform simply refuses to play along, there is a low-tech fallback: screenshot your styled word and use the image where the design matters more than the text, such as a profile banner or a story highlight cover.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Old English text generator free?
Yes β completely free, with no sign-up and no limit on how many words you convert. Type, copy and paste as often as you like.
Does Old English text work on Instagram and in games?
On Instagram, yes: bios, name lines and captions all accept it. Most games accept it in display names too, but a few titles block special characters in IDs, so test a short name before paying for a rename.
Is Old English the same as Gothic?
No, although the two are cousins from the same blackletter family. Old English is the traditional book-and-masthead blackletter, while Gothic, as most people use it today, leans darker and more decorative. The section above shows the difference side by side.
Can I get this as a tattoo font file?
No β the generator produces Unicode text, not an installable font file, and we will not pretend otherwise. For a tattoo, take the copied text or a screenshot to your artist as the concept; they will redraw it in a true blackletter typeface made for skin.
Why do some letters look broken on my phone?
Those empty boxes mean your phone or app does not have a font that can draw these characters β the text itself is not broken. It displays correctly on most newer devices, so try viewing it in another app to confirm.
